Compassion Fade: As the size of a group increases your compassion for the group fades. We have more compassion for individuals than huge faceless categories of people.
System Justification Theory: people prefer not only to hold favorable attitudes about themselves (ego) and the groups to which they belong (tribalism), but also to hold positive attitudes about the overarching social structure in which they operate (system-justification). Going with the status quo is a beneficial adaptation or social strategy making survival easier. Going against the status quo, meanwhile, always comes at a cost or penalty. And so it goes, the inevitability of most people going with the status quo instead of rocking the boat, benefiting themselves at the expense of everyone else.
