The car accident

A boy and his father get in a car wreck. They are both badly injured and rushed to the hospital. When they get there it is decided the boy must be sent to surgery immediately. However, upon arriving to perform the surgery the Chief Surgeon says, "i can not operate on him, he is my son". Whats going on here?

the answer is that the doctor is the mother of the boy and wife of the father so she is a part of the family
