it also looks like a japanese riddle:
the number says how many blocks in a line are coloured in a row:
i.e.:
151 means there is a block of 1 coloured somewhere then at least one non coloured then 5 coloured ones in a row then at least 1 non coloured then somewhere 1 coloured in the row going from left to right (or up to down depending on which row)
in a row of 15 if you have 1 7 1 you can determine a few coloured blocks because the rows length is at least 1+1+7+1+1 =11 and the longest is block is 7.
Let me explain:
if you take it from left and take the minimal one, you will start with 1 color, 1 non color then 7 coloured blocks from block 3 to 9 then 1 non coloured and a coloured one.
If you take it from the right the blocks will be 1 coloured 1 non coloured then 7 coloured blocks from block 13 to block 7 then 1 non coloured block and 1 coloured block. So blocks 7,8,9 will always be coloured. You then have part of a solution and can work your way along the rows etc.
Most solutions to these puzzles have some sort of picture.
