Not if they've heard this one before. Besides assumptions based on words do not make a person sexist, If you were to not know the answer to a math problem does that make you against any kind of math? No. And draw no conclusions from this statement either, men and women can both be very VERY profficient in math as I well know.

The surgeon has traditionally been a job owned by men for a long LONG time, you can't expect people to suddenly within the past 30 to forty years suddenly drop gender associations with words. I know all English words are typically gender neutral, but that doesn't make certain associations.

example: If I were to say, "A doll wearing a white robe," would you think it is the new Pope action figure? Or if I were to say, "A lockeroom with a pair of boxershorts on the floor," Would you think I wass talking about a women's locker room but some creepy guy snuck in and tossed his underwear on the floor two weeks ago which no one wanted to touch since? Probably not.

Okay the second one was a stretch, but it raises the point, don't condemn someone for a judgement based on a lack of information. If they naturally assume a surgeon is a man then that is their mistake, a failure in logic, a preconceived notion, it has no bearing on that person's standing on the views of sex.

Would you like to be judged on a split second decision? I sure wouldn't...

the doctor is on crack at the time and mistakes the young man for a woman. He then hears his voice, recognizing it as a man's, he deducts that the person is a transvestite. His son is also a transvestite, and so he mistakes the person as his son...that's my guess.
