well the only guess i have is there was more then twelve pears on the tree you just metioned 12, or there was a basket of pears underneath the tree that they took the pears from, or there was 2 tress, or i just have no idea.

I think what LuckilySweet is saying is that "Each" is a guy's name, so and only he took one, leaving one.

Maybe there are 12 pear trees, each with 12 pears, so each of the 12 men approached a different tree and took a pear and left, leaving 12 trees each with 11 pears. I'm not entirely sure why but this was the second image in my head after I began reading this, first I though of 12 pairs on one tree but that didn't work, then this came up so, why not?

um. . .
a) man #1 took a pear, then all the rest stole it from each other, or
b) some of the pears were hanging low,
c) there were 11 on the ground'Very Happy'

I want to say that this is a riddle that should be spoken aloud rather than written. 12 pairs as opposed to 12 pears, so if each man took one(out of each pair) that'd still leave the correct ammount.

Or this could be a 1960's riddle, referring to the KKK period in which Eleven could be the name of somebody, maybe...
