Sure enough there's a setting that says

avatars on off,

The avatars are now on!

Avatar is a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 175 pixels, the height no greater than 175 pixels, and the file size no more than 15 KB.

It can NOT be hosted remotely. We don't need to connect to 8 other websites each time a page loads.
