While reading the book "The Iron Dragon's Daughter" I came across this riddle.
Silent Unseen, small cousin of death
Born this instant, closer than breath
Killer of thoughts, assassin of dreams
I am the end of all of your schemes

There are answers that would generically fit (such as nightmares, time, heart attack, love, sleep, but none of these fit's all requirement of the riddle as does this one answer)
Hint 1) It's from the Iron Dragon's Daughter

How about a concussion?
It's silent and unseen, a bad enough one could kill you or at least induce a coma, it is caused instantaneously, "closer than breath" it is closer to your brain than your lungs or even your mouth, I know from experience it messes up your thought patterns, but I don't know anything about it killing dreams, and you can live through it so not neccessarily "the end of all of your schemes."
