Yeah, this is an annoyance, It is grammatically incorrect to use they instead of he and also really stupid looking for one to use he/she so how about we assume that this role model could be anybody of any gender be this role model was not given a specific name. The grammatical rule in this instance is, essentially, "If you don't know the gender, use 'He'" That is how it has always been, get used to it, there is no offense tied to it at all. We have reached an age of gender equality in the U.S.
So quit griping about it!!!
It's a single pronoun, it's a thing that people naturally fix in their minds if they see it as a mistake. I can tell you I made no assumptions about the role model's gender, neither should you, because you know when you assume, you make an (no, I'm not going to say it.).
I know I don't use commas correctly.
Sorry for ranting.
