The more and more I hear about it the more it seems as though the human mind has no limitations, it's pretty cool that I have some first hand evidence of this mental filling in of information gaps.

One time I wlked through my living room and thought I saw a person wearing a red shirt and kakhi pants with black or brown sandals, moreover I thought I had seen my mother sitting there. This was all out of the corner of my eye, even though half of that picture was basically impossible for me to see. I turn my head and all I see is a red shirt on the back of the the couch. I blink a few times an marvel at how that happened.

In the same way is the reason why everything tastes like chicken. When we eat new foods for the first time, we have no idea what they are supposed to taste like so our brains fill in the gaps with something familiar, apparently in many cases, chicken. Also the brain takes info from our sense of smell to determine taste, ever wonder why something tastes so bad when you have a cold? Your sense of smell is messed up, so is your sense of taste.

I'm just making logic jumps now, but this probably is responsible for your other senses increasing when one is lost, your brain recognizes both unconsciously and consciously that one sense is gone and then compensates by increasing the sensitivity of the other senses.

There is so much we don't know or understand about the human mind, which is pretty frightening if you think about it...
